MJ’s Space Lapbook and Projects

What is a lapbook? Great question!

Lapbooking is a cool way to learn and display your unit studies.  Lapbooking can be used for preschoolers to adults. Using this method, you make mini-books covering details that you’ve studied.

After making a variety of mini-books about a larger topic, all the books are put together in a large folder. It’s called a lapbook because it’s large and covers your lap.

Then the completed lapbook can serve as a review so your children can refer to it over and over again.

MJ’s first lapbook came out great and we had fun making it too.

We started our space unit reading library books and visited many websites with games and activities about space.

Books we used:

Websites we visited:

  • NASA’s Space Place
  • Hubble Site
  • Kids Astronomy
  • Learning Games for Kids
  • Enchanted Learning

After reading and visiting the different websites we started our projects and mini books.

I found a great mini book file from Homeschool Share that had all the mini books I would need. I couldn’t even use them all.

If you try lapbooking Homeschool Share is a wonderful place to find all sorts of resources. There also many more places on the web too, or you could even make your own.

As we completed each mini book we would then add them to the lapbook.

You could also pre-make the lapbook and then have your child complete the mini books and activities in it.

Sometimes a pre-made lapbook is easier for younger children, where as older children enjoy putting it together themselves.

We also did some cool art projects that we used to decorate our lapbook with. I liked having all of the projects in one place, instead of all over the frig.

Projects we did:

  • Space Shuttle Art Project found at Deep Space Sparkle by Patty an elementary school art teacher in Goleta, California. Her projects are awesome!
  • Crazy Textured Moon Art  found at Fumbling Through Parenthood
  • Make a  Galaxy Montage

The projects were a lot of fun and MJ enjoyed making her first lapbook. I plan on making more lapbooks throughout the year and next so check back to see more.

Has anyone made a lapbook? Please share, I’m always looking for new units to try.
